Verruca Treatment
What Is A Verruca?
A verruca, also known as a plantar wart, is a small growth on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Verrucas often have a rough surface and may appear as a single lesion or in clusters (mosaic warts). They can sometimes have tiny black dots in the centre, which are clotted blood vessels.
Verrucas can be painful, especially when pressure is applied while walking or standing.
How Do You Get A Verruca?
Verrucas are caused by direct contact with HPV, which infects the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). This virus thrives in warm, moist environments, making public places like swimming pools, communal showers, and changing rooms common areas for transmission.
You can get a verruca through:
Direct Contact: Touching a surface contaminated with HPV. Walking barefoot in communal areas.
Microtrauma to the Skin: Small cuts, abrasions, or weakened skin make it easier for the virus to enter.
Weakened Immunity: Individuals with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to HPV infections.
Verrucas are contagious and can spread to other parts of the foot or to other people through shared surfaces or personal items like towels.
